Favorite Ice Cream Flavors Around the World

As summer heats up, many around the world will turn to the tasty treat of treats—ice cream! In fact, July is National Ice Cream month in the United States. Ronald Reagan established it in 1984...he must have loved ice cream a lot to declare a whole month for national devotion to this icy dessert.

The top five ice cream consuming countries per capita are...

1. New Zealand

2. The United States

3. Australia

4. Finland

5. Sweden

So, I was curious. What are popular ice cream flavors around the world? Here's what I found out.

New Zealand and Australia's top flavor (behind vanilla) is Hokey Pokey, which is made of vanilla ice cream with small, solid lumps of honeycomb toffee.

In China and Japan, green tea, ginger, and jasmine are all popular flavors along with mango, strawberry, and the standards, vanilla and chocolate. In Beijing, fried ice cream is very popular at street food stalls.

Greece enjoys olive oil ice cream with figs as well as Mavrodaphne, an ice cream made from a thick, flavorful dessert wine. Personally, I would be quite excited to try both of these! I'd also be excited to try out Iran's flavor, Falude, a Persian sorbet made of thin vermicelli noodles frozen with corn starch, rose water, lime juice, and ground pistachios.

Gelato is obviously the most common ice cream treat in Italy made from whole milk, sugar, sometimes eggs, and natural flavorings. Spain's flavors reflect local tastes such as cream catalans or tiramisu, and herb flavored ices, such as lavender-jasmine, tomato, rosemary, and basil, are popular in France.

I was very surprised to learn that vanilla is the most popular flavor in the U.S. Mint chocolate chip, cookies and cream, chocolate, and strawberry round out the top 5.

One final fact: chocolate syrup is the most popular ice cream topping in the world.

So, there you have it, popular ice cream flavors around the world. What's your favorite flavor?
